LATIBULE

Latibule.

noun. a quiet retreat.

Breath, treated as a practice. Nine techniques grounded in research. No streaks to chase, no badges to collect — just a quiet field that breathes with you.

WHAT IT IS

A small iOS app for breathing.

Pneuma is a quiet companion for nine breathing practices — drawn from slow-breathing research, vagal-tone studies, and traditional pranayama. Each is rendered as a slow field of glyphs that fills and drains with your breath. Nothing competes with the practice itself.

NINE PRACTICES

Each grounded in mechanism.

Every technique below names what the body is doing — vagal afferents, baroreflex, CO₂ tolerance, parasympathetic shift — and links to the paper if you want to verify.

01
Physiological Sigh
The fastest way back to yourself.

02
Resonance
Six breaths a minute. The rhythm where the body resonates.

03
Box
Four sides. A square. Used before something that demands clarity.

04
4·7·8
In four. Hold seven. Out eight. The exhale is the point.

05
Coherent
Six in, six out. Slower than waking life.
6 · 6 · 10m
06
Belly Breath
Drop the breath into the belly. The body listens.

07
Humming
Exhale as a hum. The body resonates from inside.

08
Alternate Nostril
One side, then the other. The mind follows the breath.

09
Bellows
Quick, sharp breaths. Wakefulness in the body.

HOW IT WORKS

The whole app breathes.

Two axes of navigation. No menus, no buttons that look like buttons. Match the practice to the moment, then disappear into it.

Swipe up & down
Browse times of day — morning, afternoon, evening, late. Each shows only practices appropriate for that part of the day.
Swipe left & right
Choose a technique that fits the moment. The selected one is the one Begin will start.
A field that breathes
During a session, a slow field of glyphs fills and drains with your breath. Choose the glyph, the wave's origin, the hold animation — or accept the defaults.
Swipe down to restart
If the breath got away from you, swipe down to begin the session again from zero. A soft haptic confirms the reset.
·
Hold to end
There is no wrong place to stop.
BUILT ON RESEARCH

Mechanism, not metaphor.

Slow nasal breathing engages baroreflex amplification, increases vagal afferent traffic, and quiets sympathetic outflow. The mechanism is straightforward and well-documented — what most apps obscure with vague wellness language. — umbrella review of slow-breathing physiology, Russo 2017

Every practice in Latibule cites a peer-reviewed source — most of them clinical trials or physiology reviews. The citations are tappable and resolve to the paper's DOI. Evidence grading is honest: A for randomized trials, B for observational, C for tradition.
